I want to provide you with one super food you have all heard of. Why am I talking about this? Well because I want to dislodge some of the misconceptions we seem to have about them. And that food is… Eggs!
Now you are probably thinking that you don’t need me to tell you about eggs right? Well for some reason the majority of people think that the way to eat eggs is to get rid of the most nutritious half of the egg… the yolk! They seem to think that it is better to get rid of the yolk, and utilise only the whites! They don’t realise that by eating only egg whites, they are actually eating the LEAST nutritious part of the egg.
The yolk is arguably the most nutritious part of the egg. The yolk contains nearly half the protein of the whole egg, and all of the nutrient Choline, which plays a role in preventing liver disease and is an essential nutrient. Egg yolks also contain over 90% of the vitamin, mineral, and antioxidant content of the egg. Egg whites contain only 10% of these very important nutrients.
Eggs are really a super food. A recent study showed that egg protein also increases muscle strength and development more than any other protein because of its high concentration of the amino acid leucine. And it’s important to note that egg white protein is inferior in amino acid profile and bioavailability compared to protein from the whole egg combined.
The benefits of eggs don’t stop there, either. Even though people widely regard chicken as one of the greatest foods for its high protein content and its versatility, eggs are not far behind for the same reasons. And while you may be tempted to drink them down raw like Sylvester Stallone in one of my favorite films of all time Rocky, it is important to note that actually taking the time to cook your eggs increases the bio-availability of the protein, meaning that your body will be able to digest more of the protein that is consumed. So even though it may be easier for you to drink the eggs like a shake, it is certainly tastier and better for you to take a little time to prepare them.
In a recent study that I have been reading, it was shown that those who ate a breakfast of two whole eggs lost 65% more weight than those who ate a bagel or just cereal. These stats are revealing. Clearly, eggs are an important commodity, which are very important in your diet. And not only that, the egg yolk is clearly the most important part of the egg which must not be disposed of. Grab an egg tomorrow morning and crack it open cook it and eat the entire egg…not just the whites! And enjoy a leaner healthier body!
