There are hundreds and hundreds of misconceptions and ‘myths’ within the health and fitness industry from “what are the best exercises to lose belly fat?” to “take these tablets and your fat will burn itself!”. Unfortunately parts of the industry have been saturated with fads and white lies in order to make money and increase fame and revenue!
We wanted to touch on a just couple of nutrition subjects and comments that we have seen commonly in almost every consultation we have carried out at Absolutely Fit Studio and these habits are unknowingly applied day in, day out… and are probably two of the most prominent factors that are actually slowing down peoples results when wanting to lose body fat and live a healthier and more energised lifestyle!!
- Consume lots and lots of salads week in week out to lose body fat.
- Deprive and remove all carbohydrates from your diet to lose body fat.
As always, we back up our experiences with real life science as to really give you facts and a better insight as to what and why the body does require these things to function.
You must consume salad to lose body fat and lead a healthy lifestyle.
Most people are very shocked and surprised when we tell them, as Lifestyle, Exercise and Nutrition Coaches and fitness professionals, that we don’t actually like or eat salad, it’s not something we include in our fat loss and well-being nutrition plans , and we admit we’re even guilty of actually leaving the dried up oxidised salad that you get as a ‘side’ to accompany our cheat meals!
Unless we’re sat watching the sun go down in a hot mediterranean climate with a 12oz BBQ steak… or it’s in an oozing out of a gyros with minted yogurt and pork, personally, for our tastebuds or fat loss goals we’re not personally interested in salads!!
However, due to the media, diets, (The latest celeb losing 6 stone in 3 months with the ‘tomato diet’) blogs, influencers and Socials over the years, it’s become the ‘done’ thing to prepare and consume copious amounts of salads as main meals, with next to no calories and in most cases very little nutritional value to aid and ‘speed up’ your fat loss goals.
People do not know or realise, no fault of their own they just believe what they are told, is that your ‘average’ shop bought or homemade simple salad, that includes iceberg lettuce leaves, peppers, onions, cucumber and tomatoes is very very high in water content, and very very low in fibre, this leaves the digestive system and central nervous system not really recognising that you’ve actually eaten so your body sends transmitters to the brain telling it that it’s that still hungry and in a huge deficit of energy. This leads to low bod sugar levels and and can lead to sugar cravings and over-eating later on in the day, completely counteracting your intentions of living a healthier and more mindful lifestyle!!
So what ‘should you have’ to bulk out the majority of your meals?!
(Before you turn your nose up, I’m not taking boiled cabbage & soggy broccoli!!)
Mixed vegetables, stir fry vegetables, roasted vegetables, raw vegetables, seasoned vegetables, sliced vegetables, diced vegetables, spiralised vegetables, mashed vegetables…
You get the picture!!
Include as many different colours and textures as possible to keep your mind and your gut satisfied.
PLUS you will feel fuller for longer, get a better source of fibre and a good source of vitamins and minerals to keep your immune system strong.
We hope you’ve taken a little but of science on board as to the health benefits of increasing your vegetable intake and being more mindful of the food choice you make, we cannot stress enough for you to see and feel the benefits you must apply the above habits, it is not the knowledge solely that gets you results its the application of knowledge!
You must remove all ‘good’ (complex slow realising carbs) from your diet to lose body fat and lead a healthy lifestyle
Any kind of potato (not the deep fat fried kind) and rice will not make you increase body fat or slow your results down!!
This of course does have a lot of variables but if you are following the recommended daily quantities and have built them in around a balanced diet as so you can absorb, and utilise them properly you’re laughing!!
Again, from our extensive experience in the fitness industry, the amount of clients who come in for a consultation having cut out all carbs is a very very high %.
We always ask them if they have seen or felt any significant body shaping changes from this and their reply is NO!
People often comment that they’re fatigued, lethargic, bloated and hungry all of the time, some people have even had health scares and implications as a result!!
( Hence why they are looking for a little extra help in their fitnesss journey! )
Complex carbohydrates, the slow releasing kind and non-processed/ man made kind are essential to losing body fat and what your brain and body use as their primary fuel.
Without a steady source of carbohydrates plus a medium/high exercise regime, most likely high cardiovascular based, you run a huge risk of muscle breakdown (catabolism) … the ‘weight’ on the scales may be going down but it isn’t necessarily(adipose tissue) excess body fat that you are losing, it is hard earned muscle which in long-term will not give you the shape or toned look you are after, it will leave the body loose, the skin loose, shapeless, and you may even find that you are even more unhappy and unconfident than you’re previous body composition that made you want to make a change in the first place.
We hope that you become a little more mindful about some of the habits that you’re in and try to integrate the above into your daily routine, we always stress that Absolutely Fit scientific exercise and nutrition methods aren’t the only way to get results buts it’s a proven safe and effective way of getting results if you’re serious about getting results!
